The General Data Protection Regulation is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy in the European Union and the European Economic Area. The GDPR is an important component of EU privacy law and of human rights law, in particular Article 8 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

There’s no equivalent of the GDPR in the United States, nor is there likely to be one anytime soon. A mosaic of different state and federal rules, some of them varying widely, govern some of the same issues, but there’s no central authority that enforces them.

GDPR provides a legal framework for keeping everyone's personal data safe by requiring companies to have robust processes in place for handling and storing personal information.
